Brief survey of Film and Video Umbrella’s history Steven Bode is Director of Film and Video Umbrella, a London-based agency who are Britain’s main commissioners of artists’ film and video work, encompassing single-channel pieces and large-scale gallery installations by, amongst others, Jane & Louise Wilson, Dryden Goodwin, Isaac Julien and Johan Grimonprez. In this presentation, he sketched a brief survey of Film and Video Umbrella’s history and practice, highlighting a number of recent commissions, including works by Scottish-based artists such as Roddy Buchanan, Anne Bjerge Hansen and Smith/Stewart. This covered the impact of the gallery validation systems and press reportage on the fashions and styles of work exhibited , as well as the effects of poor equipment resources and technical skills on the showing and touring of video work . With reference to experiences of exhibiting in other countries, this presentation stresses the . the need for artists representation, and encouragement for national, private and corporate collection of contemporary work of all kinds as wiel as fears for the future funding of ‘free arts’.
